FAQs on Sclerotherapy
What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy involves injecting a solution (called a sclerosant) into a damaged vein in order to close it. With the vein closed, blood is then re-rerouted to healthier veins through the body, improving circulation. This is an effective treatment for both spider veins and varicose veins.
How Does Sclerotherapy Work?
Once the sclerosant is injected into the blood vessel, the walls of the vein stick together and eventually close down. The veins are then reabsorbed into the body, effectively eliminating the unhealthy veins and leaving only healthy ones. Most patients only need one treatment, but occasionally more than one session is required for extensive varicose/spider veins.
Is Sclerotherapy Painful?
Some patients may experience a brief, minor burning or cramping sensation when the sclerosant is injected. The procedure is over very quickly, and patients can resume normal activity immediately after the procedure.
Is Sclerotherapy Covered By Insurance?
Sclerotherapy is sometimes covered by insurance, so we recommend checking with your provider before scheduling treatment. Star Vein Centers accepts most insurance plans, including Medicare.
